Today marks the 100th day since my dad left us, and the pain of his absence still lingers in my heart. It feels like just yesterday I woke up early to buy his favorite char siew bao, only to be reminded that he is no longer with us.

Offer incense to dad and invite him for a breakfast

In this bittersweet moment, I find solace in a quote by Seneca that resonates deeply within me: “It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it.” These words carry a profound truth that compels me to reflect upon the preciousness of time and the importance of cherishing every single moment we are given.

It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it

Seneca

My dad’s passing has taught me the invaluable lesson that life is fragile and fleeting. The brevity of his time on this Earth has made me realize that it is not the quantity of days we live, but the quality of the moments we create and share with our loved ones that truly matters.

We often get caught up in the chaos of our daily lives, taking time for granted and assuming there will always be a tomorrow. But my dad’s departure has reminded me that tomorrow is never guaranteed. It is in this realization that I am compelled to make the most of every moment I have, cherishing the time I spend with those who matter most to me.

Reflecting upon my last Saturday spent with my father, I remember the tenderness in my daughter’s act of fetching him his medication. Little did any of us know that it would be our final Saturday together. That day,was another day where we visited our parents, blissfully unaware of the impending goodbye. Now, as I hold onto the memories of that precious time, I am reminded of the fragility of life and the urgency to make every moment count.

Grief has a way of reshaping our perspective on life, urging us to reevaluate our priorities and how we allocate our time. In the midst of mourning, I have come to understand that time is a precious commodity we must not squander. It is not about the number of years we live but about the significance we infuse into our days. We have the power to create meaningful moments, to love unconditionally, to pursue our passions, and to leave a positive impact on the lives of others. It is in these acts that we honor the memory of those we have lost and celebrate the beauty of life itself.

Flowers, delicate and ephemeral, have long been symbols of impermanence. The lotus flower’s ability to rise above the murky waters and bloom into something exquisite is seen as a metaphor for resilience and transformation. It teaches us that even in the face of adversity and challenges, we have the power to overcome and emerge stronger, just as the lotus does.

Today, as I commemorate the 100th day since my dad’s passing, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude for the lessons he has taught me. Through his departure, he has reminded me of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. I have learned that time is not to be taken for granted but rather to be embraced and treasured. Let us all take this lesson to heart and make every moment count, for in doing so, we honor the memories of those we have lost and live a life of purpose and meaning.

“I am reminded that our time on Earth is limited, and it is our responsibility to make the most of it”
